Meet of garment workers from today

Staff Reporter

It will focus on the export segment of the garment sector

  • State Government's estimate on number of workers refuted
  • Of the total number of workers 85 per cent were rural-based women

BANGALORE: A three-day consultative meeting of the unorganised garment workers will focus on issues such as demand for fair minimum wages, the garment industry's ability to respond to it and the strategies for organising workers for collective bargaining. The meeting is organised by the Bangalore-based Garment and Textile Workers' Union (GATWU) from October 13 to 15 here. Vice-president of GATWU Jayaram K.R. told presspersons here on Thursday that the meeting would focus on the export segment of the country's garment industry, which had been growing substantially with significant rise in export revenue since 2005. There were many issues such as meagre wages, poor working conditions, violations of labour laws and human rights owing to the disorganised workforce in the sector which had to be addressed.
