dated October 13, 1956: Indian team for first Test

The Indian team to meet the Australians in the first Test match, which begins in Madras on October 19, has been announced. Except for the inclusion of Ghulam Ahmed and H.R. Adhikari in the place of Phadkar and Contractor, it is the same team which defeated New Zealand in the fifth and last Test played in Madras last season. Phadkar has not yet arrived in India. Contractor has been chosen as one of the reserves. The announcement was made in Benaras on October 11 by the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Maharajkumar of Vizianagaram. The team is: P.R. Umrigar (captain), Ghulam Ahmed, V. Mankad, V.L. Manjrekar, S.P. Gupte, N.S. Tamhane, A.G. Kripal Singh, J. Patel, H.R. Adhikari, G.S. Ramchand and P. Roy. Twelfth man: J.M. Ghorpade. Reserves: N.J. Contractor and P.G. Joshi.
