Asian film festival begins in Pune
Pune
: The nine-day fourth Asian Film Festival, featuring 80 films from 22 Asian countries, began here on Thursday.
The film festival is being jointly organised by the Aashay Film Club and Indira School of Communciation, in association with the Asian Film Foundation, Mumbai.
The Festival was inaugurated by Vishal Bhardwaj, whose The Blue Umbrella has been chosen as the inaugural film. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi was to inaugurate the festival, but she could not make it. Mr. Bhardwaj's recent Hindi film Omkara had won rave reviews.
Veteran actors Sulochana and Chittaranjan Kolhatkar were felicitated to mark the 75th year of Marathi cinema, at the inaugural ceremony.
The festival will conclude on October 20, with an Iranian film directed by Majid Majidi. A retrospective of his four films Children of Heaven, Colour of Paradise, Father and Baran will also be screened.
Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Naushad, V Shantaram and Hrishikesh Mukherjee will be offered tributes for their contributions to Indian films. The festival will showcase films made in most of the Indian languages, exclusive films from China, Japan, Israel, Iran and many other Asian countries. PTI
