Special Correspondent

R. Ashok

BANGALORE: Minister for Health R. Ashok has instructed Health Department officials and doctors to take precautionary measures on a war footing to prevent the spread of dengue in the State for which the Government will provide all the support required.

Addressing a meeting of officials of the department and district health officers here on Thursday, Mr. Ashok said Rs. 5.80 crore had been released to purchase drugs. A few suspected cases of dengue had been reported from Davangere, Raichur, Bijapur and Gulbarga districts.

He told the doctors to be alert for the next two months and warned that stringent action would be taken against hospital personnel found not heeding the Government's instructions.

Around 2,000 dengue-screening kits have been supplied to hospitals to conduct preliminary tests on patients suspected to have the disease. The authorities have been instructed to supply 1.20 lakh mosquito nests to households in various slums. A sum of Rs. 23.50 lakh has been earmarked for a publicity campaign on the epidemic. Non-governmental organisations will be roped in to create awareness about dengue in villages, he said.

Dengue claimed four lives and affected 60 people in the State till October 9 this year, he added.
