Frost to conduct clinic for coaches

Principal Correspondent

BANGALORE: A nostalgic weekend is set to unfold at the Karnataka Badminton Association (KBA) courts.

In a press conference here on Thursday, the KBA formally announced the arrival of Morten Frost, the former World No.1, on Saturday. Frost will be conducting a three-day clinic for coaches commencing here on October 16. Nearly 30 coaches from all over Karnataka will attend the clinic. "We hope to standardise the coaching patterns all over the State. Right now, if you see at the Club-level, there are different coaching methods and that is not the case in Malaysia, Indonesia or Korea. They have uniform training methods and that helps the players," Prakash Padukone said.

"As a follow-up, I will visit the districts and check out the coaching methods," added former National coach Vimal Kumar.

Padukone also lauded the KBA for its efforts to promote the game at the grassroots-level, especially its newly introduced inter-school tournament.

"I appreciate the KBA's efforts and also its financial support to promising youngsters like Aditya Prakash, Ajay Patil and Sayali Malgave, who will shortly compete in the sub-junior Nationals at Pondicherry," Padukone said.

Both Padukone and Vimal Kumar said that the initial plan was to send a few coaches to Malaysia. "We wanted them to learn the coaching system in Malaysian schools. But somehow it did not work out and then we thought about getting Frost here. We have not shelved the idea of sending coaches to Malaysia and we are still working on it," Vimal said.

The KBA President, Vivek Karan, reminded the media about Frost's visit after a gap of 23 years. "He had come here last to play exhibition matches to raise funds for building the Prakash courts in Malleswaram," Karan said.
