NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday conducted raids against 17 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials, including a former Deputy Commissioner of Civil Lines Zone and now a senior Delhi Government official, and eight builders and property owners for allegedly indulging in corrupt practices and illegal constructions in various parts of the Capital without proper sanctions from the civic body. The CBI teams raided more than two-dozen places across the city, including offices and residences of the MCD officials, and seized documents and Rs.35 lakhs in cash. The action comes after the Delhi High Court had in May this year asked the CBI to register FIRs against MCD engineers and builders to expose nexus between Government officials, builders and property owners in carrying out illegal constructions in violations of building by-laws. After carrying out 17 preliminary investigations, the CBI conducted raids against a former Deputy Commissioner of Civil Lines Zone, Brij Raj Singh Rathore, who is now Secretary in the State Council for Education, Research and Training, Delhi Government. Similarly, raids were carried out against former Executive Engineer (Civil Lines) Nazrul Islam, former Executive Engineer (Shahdara) S.P. Gautam and former Executive Engineer (South) A.K. Gupta. Raids were also conducted against more than a dozen builders
