LUCKNOW: Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday attacked the UPA Government for misusing the office of the Governor to strengthen the Congress party and settling political scores with non-Congress Governments. He accused the Centre of launching a campaign to unsettle the non-Congress Governments.

Call to socialists

With former Defence Minister George Fernandes present at the function to mark the death anniversary of Ram Manohar Lohia, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister gave a clarion call to the Samajwadis (Socialists) to come on a common platform and give a new direction to the country's politics. He said he was ready to work under any Samajwadi leader.

Mr. Yadav stressed the need for training the youths to counter the inroads made by foreign culture. He called upon the youth to take over the reins of the "fourth war" and participate in the training camps. He recalled what Lohia had said: if crores of people came out in support of truth, the country's destiny will change.

Grave crisis

Stating that the country was headed towards a grave crisis and the threat of economic slavery loomed large over the horizon, the Chief Minister said India's prestige had been lowered in the comity of nations. He said it was reprehensible that the Prime Minister was playing footsy to other countries.

He regretted that India does not have a credible foreign policy. Crimes were being committed against humanity, he said, adding that the time had come for the Socialists to stand up to the conspiracy.

`Hold training camp'

In his address, Mr. Fernandes emphasised the need to hold training camp for Samajwadi workers at least once every month where views could be exchanged on the contributions made by Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan. The former Defence Minister said in keeping with the changing times the face of struggle and the method of political action should also change. Mr. Fernandes lauded Mr. Yadav for translating Lohia's thought into action.

Mr. Yadav announced construction of a Rs.200-crore JP Research Centre in Lohia Park here.
