NEW DELHI: Noted poet and literary critic Parmanand Srivastava has been selected for this year's prestigious Vyas Samman instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation. The 71-year-old Prof. Srivastava, formerly of the Hindi Department of Gorakhpur University, is being honoured for his critical work, "Kavita ka Arthaat" (Meaning of Poetry), written in 1999. The award carries a plaque and a cash prize of Rs.2.5 lakhs. It is given every year to an outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by an Indian citizen published during the past ten years. The selection has been made by a jury presided over by an eminent litterateur and Head of the Hindi Department, University of Allahabad, Prof. Satya Prakash Mishra. A few years back, Prof. Srivastava retired as an `Acharya' of Premchand Chair in Gorakhpur University after working for many years there.
