Stricter surveillance suggested

    NEW DELHI : The Central team that visited Kerala to investigate the deaths attributed to chikungunya has suggested that there be a comprehensive medical audit before the mortalities are confirmed.

    Stressing the need for stricter outbreak surveillance, the report of the team recommends involvement of the community to prevent the disease. The local health authorities should formulate a need-based micro plan.

    Of the 1.3 million suspected chikungunya cases reported in the country, Kerala reported close to 43,000 cases between August and October. The State Government had said that as many as 90 people had died of the disease.

    The total number of confirmed chikungunya cases is 1,602, while no death has been confirmed so far. In Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), 21 cases have been confirmed.

    Apart from Delhi, the maximum number of confirmed chikungunya cases has been reported from Maharashtra (679), Karnataka (294), Andhra Pradesh (248), Gujarat (145), Tamil Nadu (1), Madhya Pradesh (62), Kerala (38) and Pondicherry (4).

    Dengue

    In the case of dengue, 4,253 cases and 84 deaths have been reported from across the country. In Delhi, 1,186 cases and 22 deaths were reported, which included 766 cases in the city and 420 cases from the NCR and adjoining States.

    Apart from Delhi, the maximum number of cases has been reported from Kerala (794), Gujarat (424), Rajasthan (328), West Bengal (314), Tamil Nadu (306), Uttar Pradesh (282), Maharashtra (240), Punjab (201), Haryana (100), Karnataka (60) and Andhra Pradesh (18). Four people died in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, 22 in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu.
