NEW DELHI: Two alleged members of one of several bag-lifting gangs based in Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police. The police claim to have solved 37 cases of bag-lifting, including theft of jewellery worth Rs. 55 lakhs at Karol Bagh in 2004, with their arrest. Acting on tip-off, a Special Staff team led by Inspector Rajender Singh arrested the two accused -- Mohan and Sunder -- near Batra Hospital on Wednesday. The police allegedly recovered a knife, a stolen bag and some narcotic substance from their possession. According to the police, Mohan's accomplices -- identified as Kumar, Santosh, Beriwel and Selvam -- had already left by train for Tiruchirapalli this past Tuesday. Mohan and Sunder had bought tickets to board a plane to Chennai from Delhi Airport on Wednesday. The police said the gang, which had been active in several areas of the Capital, usually targeted places where cash transactions were high. To avoid police detection, the gang members rarely carried stolen articles with them. They used to send money to their family members back in their native place through bank transactions. They used mobile phones with Tamil Nadu numbers. When arrested, the members of this gang would feign ignorance of Hindi, the police said.
