Three held for auto thefts

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly stealing vehicles from various parts of the district. The police claim to have recovered nine stolen cars and a stolen motorcycle from the accused.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team comprising Sub-Inspector Sanjay Bhardwaj and others caught the three accused -- Mubarik, Sirdhar and Shezad -- at Hauz Khas in South Delhi on Wednesday. The stolen cars -- a Maruti Esteem, a Tata Indica, Maruti vans and a Maruti 800 -- were recovered at their instance.

The police said while Mubarik and Shezad used to steal the vehicles, Sirdhar was the receiver. He would sell off the stolen cars or dismantle them and sell their parts.

According to the police, the gang, which hailed from Mewat region of Haryana, would collect at Ashram, All-India Institute of Medical Sciences or Nizamuddin before setting out to steal the cars. Further investigations are under way.

Woman commits suicide

New Delhi: A 30-year-old woman on Thursday allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire in a North-west Delhi locality, police said. Salma, a daily labourer who had been living at Vandi colony of Tahirpur, committed suicide by setting herself afire. The woman was married to one Nazrun for last 15 years and leaves behind three children, police said.

Woman raped

New Delhi: A 40-year-old woman was on Thursday raped allegedly by a priest inside a temple in a North-west Delhi locality, police said. The accused, Parvesh (28), priest of Gaurisankar mandir in Mukherjee Nagar, has been arrested after the woman lodged a complaint. According to police, the woman, hailing from Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, had been living in the temple for the last 20 days. The priest took her to his room in the temple and allegedly raped her this afternoon.

Protest rally

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State Committee of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) organised a protest demonstration at the office of the Labour Commissioner here on Thursday.

The demonstrators were addressed by IFTU Delhi State Committee president Animesh Das and secretary Shankar Dayal, who alleged that the Labour Department "had been working with a pro-management attitude" and "long-pending complaints of labourers were yet to be disposed of."

`You Are God' released

NEW DELHI: Punjab Finance Minister Surinder Singla on Thursday said that human beings have the potential to discover themselves and internalise their lives to the concept of God.

Releasing a coffee table book, "You Are God -- The Bhagwad Gita as Never Before", here, Mr. Singla commended the author, Shashi Verma, for his path-breaking perspective on the Gita in a refreshingly simple and easy-to-assimilate manner. The book has been published in both Hindi and English.
