dated October 15, 1956 (there being no issue of the paper dated October 14): Western proposal vetoed

Russia on October 13 vetoed in the Security Council an Anglo-French resolution calling for endorsement of the 18-nation proposals for international control of the Suez Canal. Yugoslavia also voted against this section of the resolution. But the Council adopted unanimously the rest of the same resolution approving six principles agreed to by Britain, France and Egypt. The Council then adjourned. Afterwards the Foreign Ministers of Britain, France and the US, bleary-eyed after the extraordinary late night session, hid their disappointment and put on an optimistic front, speaking of their hope for future negotiations. The UN Secretary General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, said the resolution passed by the Council proved a "valuable starting point for a further exploration of the existing possibilities to find a just and peaceful solution for the Suez problem."
