Corrections and clarifications

* A reader wanted to know what the correct spelling of the Sri Lankan President is, having noticed that it has been changed from Mahinda Rajapakse to Mahinda Rajapaksa. The official spelling is Rajapaksa, B. Muralidhar Reddy clarifies, and the change is to comply with this.

* The box item "`Finding a publisher was a nightmare'" (October 12, 2006, page 1) accompanying the report "Kiran Desai wins Booker Prize" stated that Desai's first novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard was published in 1988. The interview with her "`Writing can be a dangerous activity'" (Op-Ed, October 12, 2006) gave the year of publication as 1998. A few readers wondered which was right. It is 1998.

* In "Cronje offered money: Gibbs" ("Sport", October 13, 2006), the sentence (in the later editions) should have read, "Although Gibbs did not mention Nicky Boje's name, the police are considering him as an accused in the case." Because of an editing error, the word "mention" was missing in the report. A reader pointed this out.

* Further to the clarification to "Corrections and Clarifications", a few readers point out that the statement "3,000 degrees kelvin and 2.7 degrees kelvin" needs to be corrected. In the kelvin scale, the convention is not to use "degree". So the correct statement should be "3,000 kelvin and 2.7 kelvin".
