Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article "Reluctant centenarian" (Magazine, Oct. 8). I am sure R.K. Narayan will sell even in 2035. His style of an amused narrator who does not pass judgments will always be loved. The values he deals with are universal, pegged to Malgudi, of course. Readers will always find him contemporary. His centenary should be marked by year-long celebrations so that youngsters can learn more about him and his works.
S. Pushpavanam,
* * * The readers are thankful for the feast of facts provided in the article. The Tamil version of Swami and Friends was serialised in the journal Ananda Vikatan under the title Swamiyum Snehitharkalum. It appeared in Balar Malar children's supplement of Vikatan.
C.V. Krishnamoorthy,
* * * One of the stories surrounding the origin of `Malgudi' is that it is a combination of `Malleswaram' and `Basavanagudi.' R.K. Narayan's heroes and heroines were never characterised in a grand manner. They were those the readers could identify with their next-door neighbours.
K.V.S. Bhaskar,
