UGC scales

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders extending UGC scales of pay to lecturers/physical directors/librarians in private aided degree colleges without insisting on a pass in the National/State Eligibility Tests. The GO 140 exempts NET/SLET lecturers appointed before July 16, 2001. All lecturers who are in the State revised pay scales 2005 are eligible to get the benefit, according to Andhra Pradesh Affiliated College Teachers' Association in a press release issued here on Friday. - Special Correspondent

BJP in-charges

HYDERABAD: BJP State president N. Indrasena Reddy has appointed the following functionaries as in-charges for Graduates constituencies in connection with Legislative Council elections.

Eight hurt in clashes

Sangareddy: Eight persons were hospitalised following clashes between two communities in Kalvakunta village here on Thursday night. Trouble started when a group objected to some persons consuming liquor on Wakf land. This led to a small fight. The elders and police intervened and pacified both the groups. However, clashes erupted soon after the police left the area. P.V. Sunil Kumar, Medak SP, visited the injured at the Government Hospital on Friday. - Staff Reporter

Hacked to death

KADAPA: Two Telugu Desam Party activists Gangaraju and Krishnaiah, both brothers, were hacked to death by rivals in Thimmapuram village in Jammalamadugu mandal on Friday.

The police suspect the attack was in retaliation to the murder of a Congress leader Nadipi Linga Reddy in Yaganti of Kurnool district in 2004, in which the two brothers were accused. - Staff Reporter

Cinare puraskar

KARIMNAGAR: Vijayawada-based poetess Mandarapu Hymavathi has bagged the prestigious Cinare kavitha puraskar-2006 for an anthology of poems titled `Nishiddakshari'. Incidentally, she is the first woman poet to receive the Cinare puraskar since its inception in 1990. The award carries Rs. 10,000 cash, a citation and a shawl and would be presented in the last week of October. - Staff Reporter

BJP asks Lalu to quit

KARIMNAGAR: BJP State president N. Indrasena Reddy has asked Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad to resign to his post in the wake of Allahabad High Court abolishing the Banerjee Commission constituted to inquire into the Godhra incident in Gujarat.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that Mr. Lalu Prasad had constituted the Banerjee Commission even after the Nanavati Commission was looking into the Godhra incidents only to defame the BJP Government in Gujarat. - Staff Reporter

Convicted for life

VISAKHAPATNAM: Eleven persons of Narsipatnam have been convicted for life and fined Rs. 10,000 each for murdering one person and injuring two others.

Ninth Additional Sessions and District Judge Y.V.B.G.S. Parthasaradhy on Thursday found the 11 persons guilty of killing Korra Benna Rao and injuring Bhimpalli Appalaswamy and Ponnada Papa Rao at Narsipatnam on April 24, 2005. - Special Correspondent

Deccan Grameena Bank loans to farmers

ADILABAD: Deccan Grameena Bank (DGB) on Friday disbursed loans to farmers in flood-affected areas of Bela and Jainad mandal. Adilabad MLA C. Ramchander Reddy and DGB Chairman S.V. Hanmanth Rao disbursed loans amounting to Rs. 1.5 crores to general credit cards to 1,735 cardholders from the villages of Arli (T), Pendalwada, Karanji (B), Sirsanna and Bela. Also loans to beneficiaries of the Rajiv Yuva Shakti were disbursed. -Staff Reporter

Free medical camp by M&M employees

SANGAREDDY : Staff of Zaheerabad-based Mahindra & Mahindra under their Employees Social Options Programme (ESOP) organised a mega health camp for school children. Around 500 primary school children from different schools assembled at the company-run Mahindra Foundation School auditorium for the health check-up. Discom drive to educate ryots

ADILABAD: A campaign is to be launched by the northern Discom to educate farmers and dissuade them from cultivating paddy during the ensuing rabi season. . A press release by Chief Managing Director V. Anil Kumar said field officials of the Discom and the Agricluture department will organise meetings at sub-station level starting November 1 to motivate farmers to grow irrigated dry crops during the season.

Revenue inspector in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) employees on Friday arrested an Additional Revenue Inspector Y.P. Ramesh working in Boothpur Mandal Revenue Office of Mahabubnagar district on charge of accepting Rs. 1,500 bribe from a person.

House panel visit

KADAPA: A 17-member Legislative Assembly Committee on Scheduled Caste Welfare headed by N. Subramanyam will visit Kadapa on October 16.

The committee will receive representations from SC organisations and SCs at R & B guesthouse here from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 16, according to Deputy Director of Social Welfare T.G. Christopher. -Staff Reporter

PMRY loans

KADAPA: District Industries Centre has called for applications, for grant of PMRY loans, from youth aged between 18 and 35 years and passing eighth class by October 25. Youth of Kadapa Municipal Corporation, Rajampet, Badvel, Rayachoti and Proddatur municipalities, Chapadu, Mydukur and Duvvur mandals could apply for aid to set up self-employment units, according to a statement. They should submit two passport photographs, caste, nativity and income certificates. -Staff Reporter

AISF protest

KURNOOL: Activists of the AISF staged a demonstation at the Zilla Parishad meeting here on Friday demanding autonomous status for the PG centre.

The protesters raised slogans and tried to barge into the meeting hall. The police prevented the protesters from disturbing the meeting. Later the Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa received a representation from the AISF leaders. The Zilla Parishad too passed a resolution accordingly. -Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: A psychological counselling and guidance programme was conducted for the benefit of students at Government Degree College, Nagari, on Friday. In his address, M. C. Reddeppa Reddy, principal of SVU College of Education and Extension Studies, advised students to seek the help of counsellors .

Kakinada: Dengue awareness camp was organised under the aegis of Lions professional club at Sushruta Polyclinic and Sri Satya Dental Clinic at Sarpavaram junction here on Friday. A. Srikakulam: Members of the Srikakulam Press Club organised a dharna at the seven roads junction on Friday, demanding action against Congress workers who had attacked reporters and cameraman of a TV channel when they went to Polakai to cover an incident.
