CoD to probe riot-related murders in Mangalore

MANGALORE: The State Government has handed over investigation of the two murder cases reported during the recent communal flare up in the district to the Corps of Detectives (CoD).

The team led by Sanjay Sahai, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, comprises the Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents and other staff. It has arrived in the city for the purpose. Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao told The Hindu here on Friday that the Government had directed the CoD to take over investigation of the two cases. Mr. Rao said the team had visited the places where the murders took place.

Riot update

Giving an update on the riots, Mr. Rao said police had registered 252 cases, arrested 424 persons and taken 279 persons into preventive custody. The number of persons injured in these incidents has gone up to 145. A total of 124 vehicles and 114 shops have been damaged. The total loss to property including vehicles and buildings has been put at Rs. 2.20 crore.

On district administration's move to direct shops and commercial establishments to close by 10 p.m., Mr. Rao said it was an informal arrangement arrived at by the authorities with the stakeholders. The district administration would reconsider it based on the situation.
