Notes allegedly printed in Pakistan, smuggled in through couriers

NEW DELHI: A 60-year-old man has been arrested at Welcome Colony in North-East Delhi by the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch on charges of supplying counterfeit Indian currency notes printed in Pakistan. The police claim to have recovered notes worth Rs.50,000 from him.

On October 7, the Inter-State Cell received a tip-off that one Khalil Ahmed of Muzaffarnagar in U.P. had been supplying fake notes. A decoy customer was sent to strike a deal with the suspect. Khalil asked the decoy to receive the consignment at Welcome Colony. As soon as the deal was struck, the police arrested Khalil. The police recovered notes of Rs.500 and 1,000 worth Rs. 50,000 from him.

During interrogation, Khalil allegedly disclosed that the notes had come from Pakistan through couriers. According to the police, he said fake notes in bulk were being smuggled through the Delhi-Lahore bus and the Atari Express train. The police said Khalil was arrested earlier this year on similar charges at Jinjhana in Muzaffarnagar.

He allegedly disclosed that his native place in Muzaffarnagar has become a hotbed for such criminal activities. Khalil has travelled to Pakistan on at least five occasions, while his son had gone there six months ago. Some of their relatives live in Pakistan and through them the fake currency notes are pushed into India, the police said.

It has also come to light that Mumtaz, a resident of Lahore in Pakistan, is a key link in the fake currency note racket and runs the business with the help of Iqbal, also a Pakistani national. The police are looking for a resident of Kairana in Muzaffarnagar, Bhura, in this connection.
