Activists detained

new delhi: Six activists of NGO Parivartan were detained by the Delhi police at Vigyan Bhavan for holding a silent protest in front of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during a programme on the Right To Information Act being held there.

These activists had raised placards at the venue seeking permission to meet the President for two minutes. According to Parivartan sources, while the President had upon deliberations with the Chief Information Commissioner, sent a commissioner to discuss the matter with them and the issue appeared to have been resolved there and then, the Delhi police did not take it lightly and detained the activists including three girls and took them to Tughlak Road police station. The activists had not been released till the time of going to the press.

Held for extortion

NEW DELHI: One person has been arrested by the South-West Delhi police and the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government for allegedly posing as a police officer and extorting Rs. 25,000 from a woman at Sarojini Nagar here

The police said two persons had stopped the complainant on Thursday. One of them claimed to be Sub-Inspector Rajbeer. The duo impounded her Maruti Alto car, took Rs.25,000 from her husband -- who further promised to pay another Rs. 25,000 -- and also kept her gold ornaments in their "custody".

Following the complaint, a trap was laid on Thursday and one of the accused -- identified as Anil Kumar Singh -- was arrested while accepting "the second instalment of his bribe".

According to the police, Anil, son of a constable with the Central Bureau of Investigation in Patna, was also involved in running a prostitution racket. He had also allegedly forced his wife into the racket. He had also been involved in stealing articles from five-star hotels. He had even made several hoax calls claiming that bombs would explode in five-star hotels. The police had earlier arrested him in a couple of cases.

Contractor arrested

New Delhi: Delhi police on Friday arrested a 30-year-old labour contractor for his alleged involvement in various heinous criminal cases in Mehaurali area in South Delhi. A senior official from Crime Branch said that Manoj Yadav, a resident of Gurgaon and wanted in cases of murder and attempt to murder, was arrested following a tip-off. Yadav was accused of murdering his father and attempting to murder his brother along with his associates following a dispute on ancestral property a few years ago in Haryana. He had been evading arrest since then, said the police official. The Haryana police have been informed.
