PAYING HOMAGE: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and others paying their last respects to Mathai Chacko who was laid to rest on the premises of the party office at Thiruvambadi on Saturday.
Kozhikode: Thiruvambadi MLA and CPI(M) State committee member Mathai Chacko was laid to rest with State honours on the premises of the party office at Thiruvambadi on Saturday. A large crowd of people, including party cadres and local people, paid homage to the departed leader. Earlier, his body was taken in a procession from the CPI (M) district committee office in Kozhikode where it was placed since Friday evening for the public to pay homage. The coffin was carried in a tempo van accompanied by a cavalcade of vehicles at 8 a.m. The cortege touched small and major towns on its way. People crowded in large numbers at Kunnamangalam and Thamarassery to pay homage to the leader. The body was kept for some time at the Thamarassery Guest House before it was taken to his ancestral house at Aranjanil. It was also kept at the Anuragh Auditorium later. Leaders of the Left Democratic Front, including Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, were among those who reached the party office. A condolence meeting was held in the afternoon. Shops and commercial establishments in Thiruvambadi remained close till 2 p.m. on Saturday as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
