Special drive against garbage launched

S. Nadarajan

Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who has been getting several envoys and delegates from different countries since recently, said the Government aimed at providing a clean environment to make tourists' stay here memorable. As part of this plan a multi-departmental drive against garbage was launched on Saturday. The municipal councils, commune panchayats, Public Works Department, Health Department, anganwadi workers, volunteers of the National Service Scheme and self-help groups joined hands to implement the programme. One could see the volunteers and workers sweeping the roads, lifting the solid waste. Tractors, procured in large numbers, were zooming through the town and peripheral limits from the commencement of the programme in the morning.

Chikungunya

Mr. Rangasamy said earlier that there was also the threat of such diseases as chikungunya spreading here.

As many as 2,095 workers of the local bodies, 2,930 workers of the PWD, 4,635 students and volunteers of the various educational institutions and NSS, 3,050 members of self-help groups and volunteers from various organisations were associated with the "Operation Garbage" , scheme, which would be a continuous experiment here.
