Puducherry: Inspector General of Police of Puducherry Kishan Kumar has expressed concern over the alarming number of two wheeler riders dying in road accidents in Puducherry as they were found to have been driving vehicles without helmets. Distributing helmets to police personnel at a function organised by Traffic Police here on Friday, Mr. Kishan Kumar said when compared to the national average, the rate of death in Puducherry was high and last year alone around 228 two wheeler riders were killed in accidents. He said that there should be discipline on roads and very soon a package of measures would be introduced to save precious lives. He said for a population of around 7 lakh, the number of lives lost in road accidents was high and that should be addressed without delay. As part of the comprehensive and integrated traffic regulation, his department had now taken the first step of ensuring that police personnel wore the helmets. Helmets were part of uniform. Mr. Kishan Kumar said the traffic wing would have interaction with students of schools and colleges, mediapersons, volunteers of the National Service Scheme, the service organisations and leaders of public opinion in the current campaign on road safety. The long-term programme was to install cameras at various traffic points to locate violators of road rules and to proceed against after locating them on the camera. Deputy Inspector General of Police G. Vasudeva Rao said an expert body had already been associated with the programme to plan traffic management. Senior Superintendent of Police, Chayya Sharma, Additional SSP B. Srikanth, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) G. Vijayasundaram and delegates of Lions Club and leaders of public opinion spoke. The IGP felicitated a Chief Traffic Warden `Pudumai' Balakrishnan.
