Fake pesticide racket busted

KURNOOL: The police busted a spurious pesticide manufacturing racket at Nandyal in Kurnool district on Saturday and seized a packing machine and chemicals.

The kingpin of the racket Laxminarayana Chari and two others, Maddileti and Ramireddy, were arrested. — Staff Reporter

Sarpanches' plea

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Chamber on Friday represented to Governor Rameshwar Thakur seeking voting rights for the 21,943 sarpanches in the State for the elections to the Legislative Council.

Scouts' peace run

HYDERABAD: One of the four Rover Peace Batons of the Asia Pacific Region's Scouts Movement will pass through the State this week. The `run for peace' is being organised to mark the organisation's golden jubilee, according to E. Jaya Raju, honorary secretary, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Andhra Pradesh.

He said in a press release that the baton, which reached Chennai, would be in Gudur on October 16.

It would pass through Nellore, Ongole, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Ichapuram before moving on to Berhampur in Orissa on November 2.

Panel for contract lecturers

HYDERABAD: The Government has appointed a committee, headed by K. Prabhakar Reddy, Additional Secretary in the Chief Minister's Office, to look into the demands of contract lecturers in Government colleges.

The committee will have CPI floor leader Chada Venkat Reddy and leaders of the Government Colleges Contract Lecturers' Association as members. M. Srinivas, president, and E.Radha, general secretary, told a press conference here on Saturday that the commitee would look into demands of the lecturers, like job satisfaction and enhancement of salary. — Special Correspondent

B.Ed applications

KADAPA: Helen Keller College of Special Education here has called for applications for B.Ed. (Special Education) for Hearing Impaired course. OC and BC graduates with 45 per cent marks and SC/ST and physically challenged persons with 40 per cent marks can join the course. Last date to submit applications is October 23

Applicants could secure applications by post by sending a demand draft for Rs. 200 and a Rs. 10 self-addressed envelope to the principal of the college on Bellary Road, Kadapa - 1. — Staff Reporter

Plea to free prisoners

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association appealed to the Government to set free life prisoners who had completed five years to mark the golden jubilee of the State's Formation Day, on November 1.

He said of the 15,000 prisoners in various jails, 2,500 were serving life them. — Special Correspondent

Appeal for allowance

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation demanded payment of travel and other allowances as stipulated in `Government rules' to teachers who are to undergo a three-day training programme under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme from October 13.

They complained that the payment of Rs.15 for lunch and Rs.20 for conveyance was `inadequate'.

Legal awareness camp

TIRUPATI: A legal awareness camp sponsored by the National Commission for Women got underway here on Friday with the objective of sensitising women towards their rights and how they could seek legal remedies for various problems confronting them. The two-day programme being organised under the aegis of the Tirupati-based NGO, Sri Shakthi Development Society was inaugurated by Chandragiri MLA G. Arunakumari.

Free health camp

KADAPA: The State Government is indifferent towards containing chikungunya and dengue, which were rampant in the State, Rajya Sabha member and TDP district president C. Ramachandraiah alleged on Saturday.

Speaking after inaugurating a free health camp at ZP High School here, he said the Government was starving Medical and Health Department of funds and not supplying adequate medicines to treat affected people. - Staff Reporter

Camp Lok Adalat

KADAPA: Retired High Court judge R. Bayyapu Reddy settled 40 pending cases of land acquisition and awarded compensation of Rs. 14 lakhs under Somasila project, at a HC camp Lok Adalat on Saturday.

High Court Legal Services Authority secretary D. Subramanyam, district legal services authority secretary B. Syamsunder, Lok Adalat members Raja Reddy and Mallkiarjuna Rao participated.

Pamphlet campaign

KADAPA: Pushpagiri School Junior Red Cross students distributed pamphlets in some areas in Kadapa town on Saturday on prevention of chikungunya, dengue and viral fevers.

They explained to poor persons about cleanliness, checking water stagnation and mosquito menace.

Sangareddy: Medak Collector B. Venkatesam on Saturday said that November 6 was the last date for enrolment of voters under the Karimnagar Graduates and Teachers constituencies for MLC elections. Voters could also enrol on October 29 and November 5 (both Government holidays). They can register with MRO, MPDO and MEO in addition to the RDO concerned. Teachers working in tutorial colleges, Vidya Volunteers and contract teachers are not eligible for enrolment. - Staff Reporter

Sangareddy: Family members of the six persons accused of attacking and injuring a few persons of a particular community in Kalvakunta on Thursday night, staged a dharna in front of DSP Mohammad Mustaq Ahmad's office on Saturday. VIZIANAGARAM : All shops will remain open on October 17 and 24 (Tuesdays) on account of Deepavali and Ramzan festivals. An order to this effect was issued by the Labour Department, according to a press release issued by the Vizianagaram Chamber of Commerce on Saturday. - Correspondent

Fencing team selected

Kakinada : An eight-member team has been selected to represent East Godavari district at the State Junior Fencing Championship to be held at Hyderabad on October 15, according to N. Campaign on dengue fevers

Rajahmundry: Guards - Genius Urban and Rural Development Society - an NGO, has taken up campaign against dengue fevers in different wards of the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation.

Mayor M.S. Chakravarti and honorary president of the NGO R. Rajendraprasad inaugurated a camp conducted on Saturday in one of the Vambay Colonies in the 14th division.

Rice seized

KHAMMAM: Residents of Perepalli village stopped a vehicle transporting 120 bags of rice and handed over the stocks to revenue officials.

The rice stock, meant for public distribution, was being allegedly moved to market by a dealer. The revenue officials of Karepalli mandal were investigating the case. - Staff Reporter

Chess player leaves for Russia

KHAMMAM: Kuchipudi Deepika, a fifth standard student from Khammam left for Russia to take part in the under 10 international chess tourney scheduled to be held in Georgia from October 18 to 28.

The District Collector handed over a cheque for Rs. 23,500 to her father K. Johnson Babu, a bank employee, on Saturday. The amount was contributed by district officials as a gesture of support to the girl who was a donor entry in the event. - Staff Reporter
