Financial aid for those opting for kanuga plantation under NREGP

ADILABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday said poor farmers belonging to backward classes and other communities would also be covered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) so far as land development was concerned. Hitherto, only the SCs and STs figured as beneficiaries of the NREGP in terms of development of land.

Briefing newsmen here after a detailed review of the developmental activities in the district, Dr. Reddy, accompanied by Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Social Welfare Minister D.S. Redya Naik and Labour

Minister G. Vinod, said all eligible poor farmers who owned lands, which needed development could avail of the benefits under the NREGP. The Government would also give financial assistance at the rate of Rs. 3,000 per year per acre for three years for those who opted for kanuga plantation under the NREGP, he added.

The Chief Minister announced construction of a hostel for minorities in the district. He also clarified that the new medical college would come up at Adilabad district headquarters and not anywhere else putting speculations to rest.

Commenting on the progress of various developmental activities Dr. Reddy said progress under the irrigation sector was satisfactory. He said bank loaning was somewhat tardy during the current year. This would be speeded up after consulting the bankers, he added.

The Chief Minister later attended an Iftar party and interacted with party activists in Adilabad.

Foundation laid

Earlier, he laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 9-crore drinking water scheme and inaugurated the Rs. 1.25-crore new building of the DMHO office.
