Sindhura wins under-14 title

HYDERABAD: P. Sindhura (AP) won the girls' under-14 singles title defeating statemate M. Spoorti 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the all-India ranking Talent Series tennis tournament at the Naded Club on Saturday, according to information received here.

Earlier in the quarterfinals, Sindhura defeated Kapadia Sayli of Maharashtra 6-0, 6-1 and then Ankita Jadav, also of Maharashtra, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Sindhura lost in the under-16 singles final to Radhika Jadav of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-3 after getting the better of Ashwini Deotle of Maharashtra 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Meghna (AP) 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Archana loses

V. Archana of India lost to Mun Ye-Ji of South Korea 1-6, 2-6 in the final of the ITF Junior Circuit Grade V tennis tournament in Colombo on Saturday, according to information received here.

GBHS wins

Government Boys HS, Shah Ali Banda defeated St. Mario Vidyalaya in the boys' under-17 netball final at the Hyderabad District School Games Federation sports meet here.

The results: Netball: Finals: Boys: Under-17: Govt HS, Shah Ali Banda, bt St. Mario Vidyalaya 18-13. Under-14: Govt Boys HS, Kachiguda, bt St. Mario Vidyalaya 16-11.

Girls: Holy Mary School bt Govt HS, Shah Ali Banda, 15-14. Under-14: Holy Mary HS bt Care Model High School 14-11.

The Hindu wins trophy

The Hindu won the AP State Aids Control Society corporate cricket tournament organised by Sports Coaching Foundation (Masab Tank) defeating Health Secretary's Club by 10 wickets in the final. Ashok Kumar, Project Director of APACS, gave away the prizes.

The scores: Health Secretary's Club 75 in 15 overs (Naveen 30) lost to The Hindu 76 for no loss (Srikanth 39 not out).

St. Andrew's triumphs

St. Andrew's HS defeated Government HS by a solitary goal in the final of the inter-schools football tournament for the Dr. John de Souza Trophy here. The match-winner came through winger Nitin.

Md Yousuf was adjudged `best player' of the event while Clinton, son of former India captain Victor Amalraj, was `best player of the final'. The winners were given Rs. 5,000 and the runner-up Rs. 3,500. Olympian N. Mukesh Kumar gave away the prizes.

Easy win

State Bank of Hyderabad scored a 56-run win over Microsoft in the Idea Cup corporate cricket tournament organised to raise funds for the Concern India Foundation.

The scores: Gati 162 for three (Somasekhar 46 not out) bt Sreego 112 for eight (Govind 53).

Satyam 171 for no loss (Sanjay 110 not out) bt Sumtotal 61.

Bank of America 138 for five bt Franklin Templeton 129 for eight (Ram 43, Madhav four for 22).

SBH 191 for two (Srinivas 81) bt Microsoft 135 for nine.

GE 95 for seven lost to Google 97 for four.

SAAP certificate course

More than 100 delegates are attending the six-week Certificate Course for PETs and coaches organised by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh in coordination with Sports Authority of India (SAI), which began at six different venues here on Saturday.

The course is offered in athletics, hockey, tennis, swimming, volleyball and basketball. SAI has deputed 12 officials to upgrade the knowledge, rules and regulations in various disciplines during the theory and practical classes.

NRI's gesture

Iftekhar Ahmed Shareef, an NRI, will sponsor the Andhra Pradesh under-16 football team as part of his endeavour to promote the sport in a big way in the State and in Hyderabad in particular.

Shareef was felicitated by the AP Football Association after being given life membership of APFA along with former India cricket captain Mohd Azharuddin.

APFA also revived the pension scheme of Rs. 1,000 each by presenting cheques to 20 former Olympians and the family members of those who passed away recently.

Former DGP and chief patron of APFA S.R. Sukumara gave away the cheques and mementoes to the above members.
