Kashyap shocks Chetan Anand

HYDERABAD: Junior national champion P. Kashyap recorded a memorable 22-24, 21-6, 21-12 victory over former national champion and India's highest-ranked player B. Chetan Anand to enter the men's singles final of the 28th all-India PSPB inter-unit badminton tournament at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

Recovering pretty quickly after the first game deficit, 19-year-old Kashyap, trained by former All England champion Pullela Gopi Chand, came back with a series of impressive net dribbles and good cross-court returns which caught Chetan on the wrong foot repeatedly.

Kashyap will now meet Nikhil Kanetkar of IOCL in the final after the latter got the better of Rohan Castelino (ONGC) 21-15, 21-18.

In women's singles, Saina Nehawal (BPCL) expectedly moved into the final with a fluent 21-10, 21-17 win over B.R. Meenakshi (IOCL) while Trupti Murugunde (IOCL) edged out V. Misha Ruth (ONGC) 21-15, 22-20 in the other semifinal.

Women: Trupti Murugunde (IOCL) bt V. Misha Ruth (ONGC) 21-15, 22-20; Saina Nehwal (BPCL) bt B.R. Meenakshi (OICL) 21-10, 21-17. Doubles: Jwala Gutta & Shruthi Kurien (BPCL) bt Ashwini Ponappa & Nitya Sosale (ONGC) 21-11, 21-15; Aparna Balan & B.R. Meenakshi (IOCL) bt Oli Deka & Krishna Deka Raja (OIL) 21-11, 21-15.
