CHENNAI: `Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram (Prize for Poetry) 2006' was presented to Malayalam poet D. Vinayachandran on Friday. Instituted by the Asan Memorial Association in Chennai to commemorate poet Kumaran Asan, the award is one of Malayalam's coveted literary prizes. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi presented the award to Mr. Vinayachandran. The Minister said the hectic nature of modern living allowed little room for literary debate. Even media space for literary criticism has dwindled, he said. Stating that it was doubtful if Asan's contributions had been acknowledged in their entirety, Mr. Ravi called for a renewed assessment of the poet's impact on literature and society.
Motivation
Replying to felicitation, Mr. Vinayachandran described the prize as `motivation as well as a caution' perhaps as an allusion to the greater responsibility that accompanies the title. He too sought more critical studies on Malayalam's golden age poet. Litterateurs K. K. Rahulan, Balachandran Vadakkadath, P.K.N. Panicker and Y. Manikandan, C.K. Revi, Association president, Mercy Ravi, C.G. Rajendra Babu and M.A. Vijayan also participated.
