THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai has demanded the convening of the UDF committee meeting. Replying to a question at a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Pillai said the rather long hibernation of the UDF was `unjustifiable.' The UDF panel meeting should be convened immediately irrespective of the reluctance of any party or leader to attend it. In reply to a question on JSS leader K. R. Gouri statement on a bid to topple the previous Antony Government, he said he was not a party to any such move and he recalled the RSP leader A.V. Thamarakshan's reference to such moves in the Assembly. Mr. Pillai refused to go into any controversy over Ms. Gouri's statement. The KC(B) leader expressed concern over the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities. He put the blame squarely on Civil Supplies Minister for it. Mr. Pillai also expressed concern at the falling price of agricultural commodities. Rubber which ruled at Rs.110 a kilo hardly touched Rs.75 and the prices of coconut had also fallen. The Government had failed miserably to intervene to prevent crash in prices. Mr. Pillai alleged that attempts were being made by lease holders of government land to sell off those properties in their procession. He named a few plantations which had resorted to this practice. He wanted the Government to intervene and protect government properties.
