Infectious diseases cause most deaths in children

Staff Reporter

Diarrhoea and respiratory diseases leading causes of death

CHENNAI: More than 40 per cent of deaths in children below five years are due to infectious diseases, said Nitin Shah, President of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), on Saturday. He added that diarrhoea and respiratory diseases were the leading causes of death.

Inaugurating the 9th National Conference of Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Dr. Shah said that during the current year the IAP's infectious diseases chapter had focussed on effective treatment of diarrhoea. He urged doctors to prescribe oral re-hydration salts for children who had diarrhoea. S.P. Thyagarajan, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras, said "prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment" of infectious diseases in children would go a long way in bringing down the infant mortality rate. He said due to advances in technology doctors now had the advantage of finding out the anti-microbial sensitivity of a child to specific drugs before prescribing medicines.
