CHENNAI: The Thiruvottiyur Municipality has fewer Independent candidates in the fray than in previous local body polls.

The selection grade municipality has about 120 independent candidates, including many young women. However, there has been a decrease in the number of Independents. There were 160 candidates in the previous election, the official said. Booths in 27 areas, including Annai Sivagami Nagar, Kasi Koil Kuppam and Thiruvottiyur Kuppam, have been identified as sensitive.

The lack of quality drinking water and the underground drainage project are the mainissues candidates are focussing on.

The municipality has 263 candidates and about two lakh voters. The incumbent municipal chairman, T.C. Vijayan, is contesting in Ward 31, and his wife, Rajakumari Vijayan in Ward 12. "I will take measures to provide drinking water on alternate days," Mr. Vijayan said. At present, the municipality receives 25 lakh litres of water once in four days.

Several incumbent councillors, former municipal chairmen, vice-chairmen and ex-MLAs are also in the fray.

Proposals for a comprehensive underground drainage project and drinking water supply by Chennai Metrowater are under consideration.

Bumpy ride

Residents have been complaining about bad roads in the western part of the municipality and in Wimco Nagar. The stretch between Thiruvottiyur High Road and Jeevanlal Nagar is especially narrow and bumpy, they say.
