Sanitation drive picks up in city

Special Correspondent

City Corporation and various other organisations carry out cleaning operations

Thiruvananthapuram: The Statewide total sanitation campaign launched on Friday received an unprecedented public response, with hundreds of people turning up to participate in the effort. The City Corporation and various other organisations carried out cleaning operations in various parts of the capital.

As many as 82 loads of garbage were removed, Mayor C. Jayan Babu said here on Saturday. Vector control activities were in full steam under the supervision of ward committees and sanitation and health committees. Political parties, trade unions, cultural, youth and voluntary agencies, traders' organisations, residents' associations, schools, Government employees, NCC cadets, Scouts, policemen and CRPF jawans joined the activity.

At the ward level, the activities were led by councillors and officials of the Corporation's Health department. The volunteers cleaned up the premises of the District Collectorate, District Court, Health Services directorate, various hospitals, schools, colleges, media organisations and offices of the Corporation.

Apart from the Corporation's own fleet, various organisations provided 23 trucks to transport the waste materials collected. The waste was buried in public places using earth-moving equipment.

At the Connemera Market, Palayam, where the State-level inauguration of the campaign took place and the neighbouring Trida shopping complex, employees from the Corporation joined hands with their Trida counterparts, students from the SMV and Holy Angels schools, labourers from Palayam market and social workers to clean up the premises.

The vector control drive will continue in the days to come.
