dated October 16, 1956: Attlee in Madras

Earl Attlee, former British Prime Minister, arrived in Madras on October 15 from Bombay in the course of his tour of India. In a talk with pressmen shortly after his arrival at Raj Bhavan, Guindy, where he would be staying during his five-day visit to the city, Earl Attlee paid a tribute to the progress made by India in various spheres. He characterised as very wise the efforts made by India to preserve village industries and handicrafts.
