dated October 16, 1956: Chou rejects UK reports

The Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, told foreign correspondents in Peking on October 14 that his Government could not "permit such disorders on the doorstep of China" as the recent Hong Kong riots. He described as "absurd" the explanations given by the British authorities about the riots in Kowloon and Hong Kong and said the Chinese Government could not ignore such events. "Even more absurd were the British reports that the riots had been caused by Communists. The Hong Kong authorities intended to use the Kuomintang (Nationalist China) agents in Hong Kong and Kowloon to weaken the influence of the Chinese People's Republic there."
