dated October 16, 1956: Dasara in Mysore

Dasara festivities in Mysore, which commenced on October 5, concluded on October 14 with a State procession in which the Rajpramukh rode on an elephant. About five lakh people from all over the country witnessed the procession. Long before the scheduled hour of its start from the Palace, people had lined up on either side of the route extending to about three miles. The procession which was about two furlongs in length, consisted of elephants, horses, police, military, NCC, Girl Guides and chariots. The Rajpramukh acknowledged the greetings of the crowd with folded hands. The elephant carrying the golden howdah in which sat His Highness the Maharaja, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, was gorgeously attired for the occasion and wore silver anklet bells. The giant tusker moved majestically in a rhythmic swing enabling the people to have darshan of his Royal master.
