Bidar: The Department of Forests and the non-governmental organisation Parisara Vahini organised awareness camps as part of the 52nd Wildlife Week in Humnabad taluk. Over 3,000 saplings were planted by school students and gram panchayat members in six villages in the last three days. In Meenkera, Boral, Udumanal, Hudgi and Karapakapalli, the camps were organised in association with the government primary schools. Saplings of five fruit and flower tree varieties were distributed free of cost to students under the Swarna Jayanti Kunj programme. In Meenkera on Sunday, Assistant Conservator of Forests N.R. Patil asked people to protect and preserve wildlife. "If we respect the habitat of wild animals, they will not bother us. But if we infringe on their territory or try to steal their food, wild animals begin confronting humans. It can be dangerous for both," he said.
The future
Parisara Vahini president Shailendra Kavadi asked gram panchayat members to motivate people to grow bio-diesel plants in their fields. "Bio-diesel is the future. Scientists are evolving technologies that help farmers produce bio-diesel in their backyard and use it to run irrigation pumpsets," he said. In Hudgi, Sri Channamallaiah of Hudgi Math said every religion opposed cruelty to animals. "We should realise that we are sharing this planet along with animals. We should not try to dominate them," he said. Students, teachers and staff of the Karibasaveshwar School participated. Village leader Manik Siddanna, principal Vishwanth, and forest officials were present.
