Narayanasamy opposes acquisition of land

Special Correspondent

Abandon satellite town project, he says

Puducherry: The general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), V. Narayanasamy MP, has objected to the Union Territory Administration's plan to acquire 900 acres of fertile land, in the peripheral pockets for a satellite town project.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Narayanasamy said a team of farmers of Arumpathapuram, Kombakkam, Nonankuppam, Reddiarpalayam, Oulgaret and Odianpet on the outskirts of Puducherry town had told him that the fertile farm lands were their only source of livelihood and most of them were small farmers. If the lands, which were under three-crop cultivation with assured water supply, were acquired 10,000 farmers' families would be affected. Mr. Narayanasamy said he had immediately brought to the notice of the Chief Minister, the implications of the satellite town project and urged him to give it up. He said he had met Lt Governor Mukut Mithi on Friday and requested him to intervene immediately and put on hold the project. He recalled the stand of the AICC leader Sonia Gandhi that no fertile land should be disturbed for any project.

This stand was applicable to the satellite town project also.
