Dengue outbreak

The outbreak of chikungunya across the State had created panic among people. The same mosquitoes are spreading the virus that causes dengue fever. To prevent mosquito-borne diseases, we have to follow the western style, where they used biological control rather than insecticides, which were highly effective. Further, the Government should create awareness among people.

Augment civic amenities

Civic amenities and facilities are conspicuous by their absence in Guntakal town. Vehicles have increased by leaps and bounds, but the roads remain woefully inadequate. Haphazard private constructions add to the traffic chaos. A functional drainage system is absent, which worsens during monsoon. The water supply scheme leaves much to be desired. It is high time that measures are initiated to stem the rot.

Classical status

After hearing the news that Kannada is to be honoured as a classical language, I felt happy that a sister language is getting such a honour. At the same time, I feel sad that Telugu, noted in ancient puranas and praised as the Italian of the east, has not been given classical status.

Mosquito menace

The recent outbreak of dengue, cerebral malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases has added to the woes of the public. But more alarming is the callous attitude of the concerned departments. Anti-mosquito operations are not frequently done. In many streets in the towns and cities, stagnated drainage water and heaps of rubbish is a regular sight.
