NCP nod for merger proposal

Staff Reporter

Merger unconditional, says NCP State president

KOCHI: The general body meeting of the State members of the National Congress Party here on Sunday decided to go ahead with the proposed merger with the Democratic Indira Congress (K) led by K. Muraleedharan.

The formalities will be held at the Marine Drive grounds at a date to be fixed later according to the convenience of NCP head Sharad Pawar, said Cyriac John, NCP State president, at a press meet after the meeting. Tentatively, it has been decided to hold the function on November 12.

It was also decided that the merger would be unconditional and party positions would be decided only after the merger. The DIC(K) has not placed any conditions, he added. Of the 343 members in the State NCP, 260 took part in the meeting.

As NCP is a national party, DIC(K) members who join the party would follow the policies of the NCP, Mr. John said. He added that the DIC(K) had a good mass following. The merger will be good for Left Democratic Front in the long term, he said.

Mr. John and Mr. Muraleedharan will hold a joint press meet here on Monday.

The meeting also said the statements regarding the merger by leaders of the other constituents such as the CPI and the RSP of the LDF were not rational. The NCP will continue to be part of the LDF, Mr. John said. The party will have talks with these constituents, he said.
