NEW DELHI: Investigation of visitors to the MTNL Perfect Health Mela 2006 has thrown up some disturbing trends. Collation of data collected thus far has revealed that while around 50 per cent of the people were either not aware about their diseases or were under the misconception that they were contained when actually they were not fully controlled.

Also, it has been observed that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism are quite rampant in Delhi and need immediate medical attention. Obesity was also found very common. People were told that the waistline should not be more than 36 inches in case of men and 32 inches in case of women. "Longer the waist line, shorter the lifeline,'' said Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, president of Heart Care Foundation of India, which has organised the mela in association with various government and non-government bodies at Sheikh Sarai MCD Grounds.

Dr. Aggarwal said the visitors to the mela were suggested measures to reduce weight. "Any vegetable which is green in colour like `karela' (bitter gourd), neem, bhel is helpful in reducing weight and any eatable which can be broken into two equal parts, like pulses and rajma, if taken after boiling will be helpful in reducing gas.''

During the mela, people were also advised to go in for early diagnosis, right drug, in right dosage and for right duration.
