Dengue death toll crosses 100

6 deaths in Delhi on single day


  • Total number of people affected is 5,036
  • Increased efforts on to contain disease

    NEW DELHI: The dengue death toll crossed 100 on Sunday, even as 161 new cases were reported nationwide. This takes the total number of people affected to 5,036. The Capital registered six deaths during the past 24 hours, the largest number on a single day since the outbreak of the disease.

    The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme has confirmed 96 deaths and 161 fresh cases all over the country. There were 92 new patients. Two deaths were reported from West Bengal.

    In the Capital, three deaths were reported from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, two from the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and one from the Holy Family Hospital, taking the toll to 34. Of the 1,465 patients being treated in the city, 939 were from the Capital and 526 from the National Capital Region and other States.

    Kerala reported 794 cases, Rajasthan (456), Gujarat (441), West Bengal (429), Uttar Pradesh (418), Tamil Nadu (307), Punjab (250), Maharashtra (240), Haryana (113), Karnataka (90) and Andhra Pradesh (33).

    Last week, the Centre claimed that the vector density had declined and the number of dengue and chikungunya cases was showing a decrease due to sanitation drives and awareness campaigns.

    AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Gupta said: "Of the three deaths, one person was brought in, in a critical condition to the hospital casualty and died hours later while two deaths were registered in the dengue wards."

    According to the figures released by the AIIMS, the hospital has 192 patients under treatment for dengue and 170 are under observation. There have been 61 new admissions in the past 24 hours. Thirty-two people were discharged and over 800 people were screened in the out patient department. "We are doing our best to ensure that patients coming here face no trouble," added Dr. Gupta.

    On Sunday, figures released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) indicated that the city has registered 92 new cases.

    And while doctors warn that dengue cases are showing no signs of going down, senior MCD health official N.K. Yadav said sustained and increased efforts were in place to ensure that the dengue outbreak was contained soon.

    Chikungunya

    The number of confirmed chikungunya cases nationwide has touched 1,610, while the total suspected cases is 1.35 million. The number of districts affected is 181. So far, 14,025 samples have been sent for laboratory testing. Kerala and Madhya Pradesh continue to show an upward trend, while there has been a decrease in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
