Is Delhi Corporation under reporting dengue cases?

Figures from hospitals is higher than the Corporation data

  • The death toll, claim medical experts, is possibly also higher than what the government figures State
  • While the number of dengue deaths has reached 34, MCD had only five confirmed, 11 `suspected' deaths

NEW DELHI: While the Delhi Health Department claims that it is doing its best to contain dengue outbreak in the city, the virus seems to be showing no signs of abating with the number of cases mounting each day.

Thoughboth the dengue cases and deaths have been steadily rising in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) figures seem to have a problem keeping up, with the Corporation seemingly under reporting dengue cases and deaths actually taking place.

The figures released by the Corporation fall short of even adding up to the figures presented by four major Government hospitals in the city treating patients.

Delhi had started reporting dengue cases and subsequent deaths in August and figures released by the MCD claimed that the city had registered 1,373 dengue cases till October 14, (including cases from the neighbouring States) while the report of number of dengue cases from various government hospitals shows that the figure issued is far from accurate.

Figures collected from various hospitals -- All India Institute of Medical Sciences (368), Lady Hardinge (300), Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (804) and Safdurjung (913) -- at the beginning of the week themselves add up to 2,385 dengue cases, which is much higher than the figures issued by the Corporation.

The death toll, claim medical experts, is possibly also higher than what the government figures State.

Also while the dengue deaths in the city have already reached 34, the Corporation till October 14 had only five confirmed and 11 `suspected' dengue deaths.
