A favourite destination of moviemakers

Kochi has something special that keeps attracting more and more filmmakers to make their movies here. For the last several decades, the place has been one of the most sought after destinations of Mollywood (nickname for Malayalam film industry).

The number of films shot on the busy roads and outdoor locations in the city continues to grow every month.

Actors Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi have selected Kochi as the major backdrop for their latest flicks. Mohanlal teams up with Shaji Kailas in Baba Kalyani. The actor plays the role of a police officer investigating a terror network in the city.

After a long break, scenarist S.N. Swami pens the story and screenplay for a Mohanlal movie. They last combined together in K. Madhu's Naduvazhikal. Actor Murali and Biju Menon play key roles in the film produced under the banner of Ashirwad creations.

The film's shooting is on at places near Kakkanad and nearby locations. Director Shaji Kailas will like to give a hit in Baba Kalyani especially after his Dileep starrer, The Don failed miserably at the box-office. Baba Kalyani is Mohanlal's movie for Christmas.

Writer-turned-director B. Unnikrishnan comes with Smart City for the festival. The movie makes an attempt to portray the darker side of the commercial capital of Kerala.

Suresh Gopi plays an underworld don in the movie produced under the banner of Seven Arts films. The cast include actors Murali, Manoj K. Jayan, Siddique and Lakshmy Gopalaswamy.

Smart City will have to produce something really different to make a mark, as filmmakers like Rajeev Kumar, A.K. Sajan and A.K. Santosh had earlier made movies that mapped the growing presence of the underworld in the city.

Rajeev Kumar gave Jayaram's Iruvar while A.K. Sajan and A.K. Santosh made Prithviraj's Violence earlier.

Anamika directed by K.P. Venu and Abraham Lincoln is another movie being shot in the city. Newcomers Arun and Samvritha Sunil play lead roles in the movie. P.G. Johnson pens the script of the movie made by Rainbow Cine creations.
