76 per cent polling in second phase

SALEM: Salem district in the second phase of the local body polls registered 76.21 percentage of polling.

The figures also suggested that the rural voters showed much interest than their urban counterparts while electing their leaders through the grassroot-level democratic process. Despite the practical constraints of casting four to six votes, the village panchayats polled up to 76.86 per cent, the highest among the voter percentage in the district.

Next came the voters in town panchayats. Their percentage worked up to 75.75 per cent followed by voters in municipalities (70.96 per cent) and the Salem Corporation (74.51 per cent). While Edpadi Municipality, which went to polls under the second phase registered 78.31 per cent, the Mettur municipality recorded a much lesser turn out of 63.64 per cent.

Of the total 19 town panchayats, Nangavalli registered 87.98 per cent followed by Elampillai 87.51 per cent and Attayampatti (85.76 per cent). The lowest polling was at Sankagiri, which registered 54.23 per cent. Of the 12 panchayat unions,Veerapandi registered the highest polling of 85.60 per cent followed by Magudanchavadi (82.02 per cent) and Omalur (79.38). The lowest percentage of 70.42 was recorded at Yercaud.

In Namakkal district too, rural voters showed much enthusiasm to vote. The polling in the district was 76 per cent against the urban turnout of 70 per cent. The district registered 75 per cent of polling in the second phase. Town panchayats recorded 73 per cent polling while the district had no third grade municipality.

Namakkal municipality registered a voter turnout of 70 per cent. Of the total nine town panchayats, Pandamangalam registered the highest turnout of 78 per cent followed by Monhanur (77) and Kalappanaickenpatti and Paramathi (75 per cent each). The lowest turnout of 70 per cent was registered in Velur town panchayat.

Of the eight unions that went to polls, Kolli Hills, a tribal panchayat, recorded the maximum percentage of 83 followed by Mohanur (81) and Kabilarmalai (79 per cent). The lowest turn out was in Namakkal, which registered 72 per cent.
