Government ignoring relief works in drought-hit areas, says Anwari

Staff Correspondent

`KPCC has formed four teams to study drought conditions'

Belgaum: The former Minister and Congress leader Basawaraj Patil Anwari has criticised the Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP Government for allegedly ignoring relief works in the drought-hit taluks in the State.

He was talking to presspersons after a brief meeting with the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday.

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had formed four teams to study the drought conditions in the affected taluks in four Revenue divisions of the State.

He was heading the team entrusted to study the conditions in Belgaum division consisting of seven districts, Mr. Anwari said.

Although the Government had declared five of the ten taluks in Belgaum district as drought-hit, it had not taken up relief works in Athani and Raibag.

Of the 60 works sanctioned in Saundatti taluk, only nine had been taken up. The Government had spent only Rs. 3 crore to implement relief works in drought-hit areas in Belgaum district, he said.

Mr. Anwari said that all the four teams would complete study tours and submit a detailed report to KPCC president Mallikarjun Kharge. He would submit a comprehensive report on the drought condition in the State to the Government next week.
