CHENNAI: State leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday met Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi to discuss the incidents of violence in Chennai during the local body polls. Many party office-bearers were injured in the violence, prompting the CPI(M) to condemn the "DMK-instigated violence." After the meeting this evening, Mr. Karunanidhi in a statement said the leaders met to ensure that no difference of opinion arose between the two allies consequent to some miscreants indulging in violence during the polls with the aim of driving a wedge between them. "Both sides affirmed that for things to be better from now on the relations and unity between the two should be further strengthened," he said and wanted the cadre of both parties to accept the decision.
Still dissatisfied
CPI(M) State secretary N.Varadarajan, however, said that the difference of opinion between the two parties over the incidents in Chennai remained. The party was clearly dissatisfied with the happenings during the polls. But the CPI(M) would not allow the relationship with the DMK at the State level to be undermined because of the problems during the polls. The party also demanded "appropriate action" against the perpetrators of the violence; withdrawal of `false cases' against CPI(M) cadre and repoll in all the wards where violence was reported. The DMK team included general secretary K. Anbazhagan, treasurer Arcot N. Veerasamy, deputy general secretary M.K. Stalin and principal secretary Durai Murugan while the CPI(M) team included its State secretary N. Varadarajan, T.K. Rengarajan and G. Ramakrishnan.
