  • Government urged to released grants to universites

Raichur: A group of members of the Syndicate of Gulbarga University led by Manohar Maski, MLC, on Monday demanded that the State Government take steps to amend university rules to meet the challenges of globalisation.

Mr. Maski and Syndicate members Ramanujdas Boob, Jayashree R. Patel, Sunilkumar H. Vanti, Sridevi Basavaraj, Ramesh N. Havle and B. Veerabhadrappa told presspersons here that the authorities of colleges affiliated to the university should to take steps for improving infrastructure.

He said 139 foreign universities had entered the country, posing a big challenge to Indian universities in terms of quality education, infrastructure and availability of resources. It was necessary for all Indian universities to change the system of education in the wake of globalisation.

He said that he had a meeting with the Syndicate members on the steps to be taken to improve infrastructure, quality of education and to strengthen the financial position of the university, including the colleges affiliated to it. The members felt the need for universities and educational institutions to have interaction with industrialists while bringing in changes in the education system.

Such steps were being taken by some universities in the country. He said after the recent reforms in the educational field, no university depend on the Government for grants. They had to mobilise resources on their own and tie-up with industrialists while introducing new subjects. Some foreign universities established in the country had given recognition to some advanced subjects introduced by some Indian universities and extended support for infrastructure development.

Appealing to the State Government not to discriminate against while releasing annual grants to universities, Mr. Maski said the Government had not initiated any action to clear the pending grant of Rs. 5.20 crore to Gulbarga University.

These issues would be raised again when the Syndicate would meet on November 9.
