Vinan sparkles for South Zone

Sports Reporter

Palakkad: An attacking unbeaten 77 by wicketkeeper Vinan G. Nair and a patient 47 by V.A. Jagadeesh saw South Zone finish the opening day at 226 for seven against Central in the three-day Jacob Trophy State senior inter-zone cricket championship at the Fort Maidan grounds here on Monday.

Suresh Kumar, the South skipper, called the coin right and elected to bat on a wicket that seemed to have some runs in it.

Openers Sachin and Jagadeesh chipped in with some quick runs before former Indian speedster Tinu Yohanan forced Sachin to play it into the hands of Manikandan at third slip.

However, Sujith and Jagadeesh played straight and safe to steer the team to 54 for one at lunch.

The post-lunch session saw fast bowler Anil Kumar, who shared the new ball with Tinu, stun Sujith with a well-disguised delivery that rattled the middle stump.

Start of play was delayed by an hour due to overnight rains.

The scores: South Zone 226 for seven (Vinan G. Nair 77 not out, V.A. Jagadeesh 47).
