Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court, on Monday, dismissed as withdrawn a petition seeking a directive for registration of a criminal case against the former Minister for Public Works P.J. Joseph on a complaint that he had outraged the modesty of a woman on a flight. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice V.K. Bali and Justice P.R. Raman, gave the order, as counsel for the petitioner sought to withdraw the petition in view of the registration of a case by the Chennai police. The complainant had instructed her counsel to file a petition challenging the order to conduct a judicial inquiry. The petition, filed by Simmy Rosebell John, secretary of All-India Mahila Congress Committee, sought to restrain the State Government from taking any step to conduct a judicial inquiry.
Divine centre raid
The police told the Court that the raid at the Muringoor Divine Retreat Centre was conducted by a medical team, headed by the District Medical Officer, Thrissur. The medical team went to the centre, as there were complaints that the centre was housing AIDS patients and mentally ill persons. The police said the centre did not have licence for treating these patients. Nor did it have qualified doctors. The police made these submissions when a pending suo motu case initiated on the basis of an anonymous complaint against the divine centre was taken up for hearing.
