98 sailors killed in attack

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Suspected cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Monday afternoon drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a Sri Lanka naval convoy near Habarana, killing at least 98 sailors and injuring 100 others. In the evening, an Air Force fighter jet crashed in the Negambo lagoon. It encountered a technical problem and the pilot ejected to safety, the military said.

Condemning the Habarana incident as the "most ruthless and barbaric," the Government appealed to the international community to take note of the "evil designs of the LTTE to sabotage peace talks."

Though the LTTE has not owned up responsibility, TamilNet quoted the military spokesman of the Tigers as saying "military installations" were "legitimate targets" when the Army was "attacking the Tigers inside the Forward Defence Lines."
