KARUR: The Public Works Department plans to construct a 1.3 km-long barrage across the Cauvery at Mayanur near here. The proposed barrage, for which preliminary survey has been launched, will come up 300 metres downstream of the Kattalai Bed Regulator, constructed in 1933. If the peninsular river grid becomes a reality, as envisaged by the National Water Development Agency, the proposed barrage will help take excess flow in the Cauvery even up to parched Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. The plan is to prepare the ground for the link channel to take off from Mayanur. Recurring repair works to the KBR forced officials to look for other means to find a viable and stable supply for the South Bank Canal, Kattalai High Level Channel and other channels branching off the Cauvery at Mayanur. Mayanur is located at the geographical centre of the State and also at a higher Mean Sea Level (318 metres), meaning the gradient and the contours could help discharge excess outflow. A new link channel, fed by the new barrage, could link the Cauvery with the Gundar to cater to the southern districts. The barrage will provide a direct link road between Mayanur in Karur district and Seepalapudur/Kattuputhur in Tiruchi district. The barrage could help boost the water table in the riverside areas, said the Assistant Executive Engineer, N. Jothimani.
