NEW DELHI: The death toll due to dengue went up to 35 in the Capital on Monday with one more patient succumbing to the deadly vector-borne disease at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here. As many as 27 patients with dengue were admitted to hospital during the past 24 hours as the number of total registered dengue patients in the city crossed 1,500. The latest victim was 22-year-old Manoj Kumar of Aligarh, brought to AIIMS on Sunday evening. He breathed his last early on Monday morning, said AIIMS Medical Superintendent D. K. Sharma. In the past 24 hours, Dr. Sharma said, over 800 people had been screened for suspected dengue at AIIMS. Of them, 200 had been kept under medical observation in the Casualty ward and 27 admitted for treatment. "At present," he said, "176 dengue patients are admitted at AIIMS while 43 have been discharged since Sunday." The dengue outbreak, which has created immense panic in the Capital and neighbouring areas over the past couple of months, has been showing no signs of abating. As many as six patients died over the weekend. Principal Secretary Health D. S. Negi on Monday said 83 more confirmed dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals, taking the total number of cases to 1,548. Stating that dengue is known to peak around October 2, he added: "Now we are hoping that it is nearing plateau and around Diwali we would see a marked decline in cases''.
